Work-in-Progress

Currently I am displaying work from my 4th Year College Degree Show Animation "Interversal".

This is a mulit-style animation which jumps through different worlds which represent different styles of animation, from stop-motion, to a retro-game style. The narrative follows a scientists' experiments on a corpse to try and find his family who he has lost somewhere in the multiverse.

Please keep in mind these aren't final versions, rather they are rough drafts of a larger edit which I will be posting here once completed.

Stop-Motion Section

I was inspired by early episodes of South Park which used a paper-cut-out style rather than animation Software. I tried to replicate this in a style which best fit my project. This involved creating all of my assets, from character parts to backgrounds and other miscellaneous details in Illustrator and then printing them out onto suitable paper.

This took plenty of planning and organisation and a number of hours to complete. It was animated at 24 fps (I animated in twos to make it look more choppy) and involved taking countless pictures of my set-up using a light stand and finding a room with little natural lighting.

Once, I had all of the painstaking photos taken I sorted them into folders in Adobe Lightroom and exported out the best ones so I could edit them in Premiere Pro.

Retro-Game
Animation

This section was mostly animated in Adobe Animate as opposed to After Effects like much of the rest of my project was. The reason being that imperfections in the animation alongside the actual style of the animation could easily be covered up by the filter that was placed over the final exported video in After Effects.

The animation style here was inspired by Super Mario and other similar retro/arcade games, the environmental aspects of the section however, were greatly inspired by Hotline Miami for its vibrant colours and Miami locale visuals.

Then I added in sound effects to give the style more of a natural feel and added in a loading screen I hadn't originally created storyboards for.

Comic Book Inspired Scene

I struggled to use the effects I had incorporated into my scene as I had hoped/envisioned they would appear. Similarly due to unforseen circumstances and time restrictions that I have encountered in this project as a whole there was an editing choice I initially wanted that I had to remove.

This forced me to find an alternative approach to creating the scene which involved as little new assets or animated files being created.

The majority of the scene was animated in After Effects with the final cut having the multiple panels thrown together being edited in Premiere Pro. While this wasn't what I had hoped I would achieve it provided me with valuable learning experiences which I can use to better plan and avoid situations such as this from happening again.
